How to Reset a Skoda Key

I just received a message that my infotainment device is low on battery and has to be replaced. It's not the first time, and the last time I went to an auto dealer, they replaced it for free, took 2 mins and said it would work once more.

EEPROM Method

If your car key stops working, it may take an extended time for a professional technician to reprogram it. In many instances, this requires reading the EEPROM to locate the unique code for that specific vehicle. This process is risky, and there's a high likelihood of damaging the information within the module. It is best to leave this to an experienced locksmith.

An EEPROM is an in-built memory that is non-volatile and can be found in many electronic devices, such as keys for cars. It stores information that includes the unique authentication codes and encryption keys that your car recognizes when you use it to unlock the vehicle or start it. These codes are essential because they notify your car that you are the owner of the key and have permission to drive.

If your EEPROM is damaged it will cause the keys to not function properly. The issue is caused by pressing the wrong button or accidentally hitting the wrong key. It is possible to reset the key with a special tool. However this method might not work. It is better to work with a professional who has extensive experience in automotive key programming.

To reset your EEPROM, you must remove the Kessy Module from the vehicle. This is the module that sits just above the accelerator pedal on the left side of the vehicle. Remove the plastic clip that is holding it in place using the help of a screwdriver. Then, unplug the electrical connectors. Pull it out. Then, you can read the EEPROM using a SOIC8 or micro pincers that are connected to the programmer. Once you have the data, you can save it as a file and then write it back to the EEPROM.

To read the EEPROM data, use a program like PonyProg and click Read Device. The EEPROM dump appears as a hexadecimal array of characters. There are three notable Hex values: the KEY_CODE, the key_count, and the V_ARG_ENABLED. To "virginize", the chip, you must change all other hex values starting with the value 00. Once you've completed this, you can flash the chip to restore its functionality.

Ignition Method

This method requires activating the car's security system with another key. It's not applicable to all vehicles, but it should be able to reset the key fob if it isn't working properly or the battery is dying. It should work if you have tried pressing the buttons repeatedly (people often attempt to press the unlock button repeatedly).

This method requires that you switch on the ignition and keep it turned on. Next you must lock the door of the driver of the car with the second key. Then, turn the key fob back to its lock position and aim at the transmission receiver located in the front of the vehicle above the mirror. Hold the unlock button down for several seconds. The horn will sound, and the key fob will begin to work.
